Chamber Community Meeting / Previous page

Tuesday, May 26, 2015 – The Clinton Chamber of Commerce’s bi-annual public meeting series “Taking Time out for your Success” highlights new businesses, community projects, and local networking.

Telemedicine at Ozark Health

During this month’s meeting, Brooke Keith made a presentation about stroke awareness and prevention. She also explained the new telemedicine program technology that allows instant specialist consultation for Ozark Health and other Arkansas hospitals. Neurologists and other expert specialists are instantly on call via webcam and digital monitoring equipment to advise on treatment & medication. State-of-the-art instruments allow these doctors virtual access to the finest details of a patient’s condition. This is a huge benefit to a small-town critical care facility because of the valuable time saved in administering treatment prior to transport.

A&P Commission

Dwight Wilson discussed the role of the A&P Commission, initiated a few years ago to help organize and fund local improvement goals and establish a base for tourism marketing. Funded primarily by grants and by the small Hotel & Tourism tax (which in turn is revenue gained by tourism), its projects have included event attractions, such as:

  • The “Mr. Bass Tournaments” which generate an estimated $400-500 from each of the thousands of visiting sportsmen;
  • Improvements/equipment for the kiddie park;
  • Annual Christmas lighting & decorations at the park.

Recently, a grant from Fish & Wildlife has enabled a extension to the Archey Fork walking trail. The existing path links the Main Street/kiddie park in the historic downtown area to the shopping center, sports field, and outdoor nature classroom on the opposite side of Highway 65, where a 3/4 mile track follows the bank of the newly-restored Archey Creek. Now a paved path on the north end of the track connects a beautiful nature area further along the shoreline and behind First Service Bank and other businesses alongside the highway. There are more plans to expand the area into a “Riverwalk” attraction.

The Clinton A&P Commission meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month at the Clinton Municipal Airport on Hwy 16 East. Among other anticipated projects, the committee has explored ideas for a digital community billboard and a Community Center.

Music Festival

Brenda Wood added a reminder about the VBC Literacy Council’s annual Music Festival, which will be held on June 13th at the School cafeteria with an all-star gospel lineup. It’s a family-friendly, admission-free event. Read more: 3rd Annual Clinton Music Festival on the Community Calendar

Judge’s Report

Judge Roger Hooper presented some valuable statistics from his long-term study of Van Buren & surrounding counties. This research points towards causes of growth and revenue over the years, with several important factors:

  • Lake & river tourism
  • Gas well drilling
  • Higher education & medical facilities
  • Local industry & transport

Chamber of Commerce Meeting Jan 26 2015Tourism continues to be a foundation of the area’s economy, generating over $60 million for our area. It has increased by several percent in the past year, which is an encouraging trend. Many things are helping to improve Clinton’s marketability to outsiders, and continuing work on infrastructure coincides with promotional efforts including advertising and social media.

The Chamber’s community meetings are held every other month and the public is invited. Notes from an earlier Chamber meeting:
