South Fork Nature Center / Previous page

South Fork Nature CenterThe South Fork Nature Center is the Gates Rogers Foundation’s premier conservancy project.

A new trail system allows public access to the Nature Center on the western end of Greers Ferry Lake. The system of looping trails will offer opportunities for physical activity, environmental interpretation, plant and tree identification, bird and wildlife watching, and outdoor photography.

On this significant biological site, botanists Theo Witsell and Brent Baker have identified a total of 582 plant taxa, representing a large percentage of the plant taxa found in the state.

The Herbarium has at its core a collection of roughly 750 specimens produced by an initial inventory of the preserve and surrounding land.

The Center serves as a model to educate and inspire us to be aware of our environment, to protect vulnerable species, to adopt practices which are ecologically sound, and to work toward preserving/restoring a planet on which man and nature exist in a mutually beneficial relationship.
